Students leaving their term-time residence to return home to stay with family or friends this Christmas are being encouraged to make sure they take the necessary steps to do so in the safest possible way.
Students will be able to travel home from their term-time address and join one other household (for example, your family home) once term finishes. As part of a number of measures to support a safe return home, students are also being asked to take extra care in the period leading up their departure, only going out for essential purposes such as learning, exercise and food shopping. This is to minimise the number of contacts they have with others and reduce the potential for spread of the virus.
We are partnering with the University of Glasgow to offer every student at West College Scotland who does not have Covid-19 symptoms and plans on travelling over the holiday period the opportunity to take a voluntary Covid-19 test. This is designed to identify asymptomatic cases of the virus, allowing you to isolate before visiting others and do so with confidence and safety.
You can book a lateral flow antigen test if all of the following are true:
- You are planning to leave your ordinary term-time residence to travel home and stay for Christmas
- You are not just visiting a family or friend under the relaxed government rules
- You have not tested positive in the last 90 days
- You do not currently have Covid-19 symptoms
- You have not been identified as having been a close contact of someone who has tested positive for Covid-19
If you show symptoms of Covid-19 at any point please follow the guidance on NHS Inform and do not book a lateral flow test.
To book a test, please contact Billie Howie at Billie.Howie@glasgow.ac.uk. You will be expected to take two tests, three days apart. The testing programme ends on 11th December, with final tests on 8th December. If you wish to travel home after the testing programme ends, we would recommend that you self-isolate for 14 days prior to travelling.
Testing alone does not protect you from COVID-19, and you should continue to follow the Scottish Government’s FACTS guidance at all times. For more information on how to travel home safely during Christmas or about testing, please see here.
